Was having problems getting 1st gear so tried adjustment - which didn't stay
set for long, then noticed the cable outer was frayed at the twistgrip.

Replaced cable outer and set the adjusters as shown how on a youtube clip
(twistgrip set for highest gear - chain on smallest sprocket - no slack in
cable), once again it wouldn't select 1st gear.

Re-adjusted so 1st could be selected - now it won't get 7th.

Is there an incompatibility between the SRAM twistgrip and the Shimano
Deraileur lifter?

Thanks.

As I recall from googling for an inexpensive Shimano grip shifter
about a month ago, the SRAM components are incompatible with Shimano
because they move the chain a different number of millimeters with
each click.

Not quite. Chainrings are standard and the chain motion needed
is identical in all cases, but the motion needed at the deraileur is
not. Mix and match deraileur and shifters and the throw will be
wrong and you will not hit gears correctly.

Shimano must be paired with Shimano and Sram with Sram to
get the correct amount of chain motion for each shift.

Also, if you start trying to replace Shimano with Sram or vise versa,
you can have problems with dropout compatibility. ("Dropouts"
are the small brackets which provide a mounting point for the rear
deraileur). There's a good chance that a bike frame set up for
one make of deraileur may not accept the other make unless
you can make a change to the dropout to get a correct mounting.

DAMHIK.
