Okay, hold your laughter for the end... I love my 1978 Honda Twinstar
CM-185T. The problem is that the engine is in pretty ill shape. I've taken
it most of the way apart and it's pretty ugly. So, I could put all the
time, effort and money into rebuilding it, or I could get another engine.
I'm thinking, if I do replace it, why not make things interesting? I'd
like to put something bigger in there. I was thinking of stepping up to
the massive power of a 250cc Nighthawk engine. The question is, would it
fit? The other question is, is there a bigger engine that would fit? The
other other question is, can I do this cheaply? My interest in doing this
is not only so that I'll be able to smoke some small economy cars, but I'm
also excited about the prospect of owning the most bad-ass 1978 Twinstar
on the planet. I've looked at a Nighthawk, and the setup is almost
identical to the Twinstar. I think it might work. Does anybody else have
thoughts on the matter (I mean besides "get a real motorcycle")? ...Okay,
you can laugh now...

Why insist on rebuilding the Twinstar you have? Simply get a different
bike, it will be far less trouble and won't cost you any more in the long
run to get a bike in decent shape and fix its minor problems rather than
go through the trouble and expense of fitting a non-standard engine into
a bike`will be worth even less than a normal CM185T.

Since the CM250, CM185 and CB250 (Nighthawk) are all the same basic
design it should bolt straight in, or do a mix'n match with 250 top end
and crank and 185 cases. On the other hand a 250 Rebel is a definite no
go. I don't have the specs at my fingertips, manual is in the garage
along with my wife's 83 CM 250C buried under a pile of bicycle and baby
stuff. If you're feeling really ambitious the European version of the
Nighthawk had a front disk brake and a tachometer. Of course it may be
less trouble to buy a used 250 since I only paid around $450 for a
CM250C in 1991, plus the 83 has belt drive so you don't have to buy
chain lube.
