Discussion:
Dyna coils need resistor caps/plugs?
(too old to reply)

I got my new Dyna ignition coils (3 ohm) & plug wires yesterday for my 80
KZ1000. I noticed that the plug wires do not have resistor caps on them
like my old OEM wires did (5 K-Ohm cap). Does anyone know if these coils
can drive a non-resistor plug directly? The Dyna plug wires have the plug
caps on them already and they do not have any resistance. The 1 page of
installation directions say nothing about it. I suppose I could always
just use resistor plugs if necessary.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Russ

Don't know all that, but you can get plug caps very cheaply from someplace
like Dennis Kirk.

You can go either way. In this type of circuit, a 5K resistor makes
about as much difference as a flea on an elephant.

Thanks to all. I called both Dyantek and the folks where I bought the
coils (mpsracing.com). Pretty much everyone agrees that it doesn't really
matter. In fact the guy at Dyna said that back in those days (late 70s -
early 80s) the only reason they put resistor caps on was so that your
bike's ignition would not interfere with the radio in the car next to you.
He also said that there is no noticeably performance difference between
using a resistor cap/plug or not.

So, since I already bought the resistor plugs, I'll go ahead with the
install with the copper core wires and see what happens. Hopefully the
rain will stop this weekend...
